Modifying Certain Health Information Tracking

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Sorry, this entry does not have anything to do with reforming the way the health care system operates. It actually has to do with me and a small change that I am making. First, though, understand that I am what they call an information freak. I love tracking information – especially when the statistics that are generated are beneficial to me and those things that are important to me. To this end I’ve been tracking certain statistics as they relate to my health.

For example, each week I track the amount of steps that I take via my pedometer and I record the weekly number on my Google Calendar application. I also track which days and what time during the day that I visit the gym. Simple things like this – I think they give you powerful pieces of information to cull through when you’re bored.

Anyway, about a year ago I stopped tracking my daily caloric intake. That probably wasn’t such a good idea so I’ve decided to start tracking that again via FitDay.com. This is the program that I used last year when I was watching what I ate and it’s pretty powerful. Oh, and best of all – it’s completely free.

The other minor modification that I’m making in my health information tracking is when I start my week for logging my weekly steps. In other words, I used to start my week on Monday and stop my tracking at night on Sundays. And there was some reason for doing this as I recall. Something about tracking on these days makes for a better overall weekly count – I really don’t remember. Well, after doing that for a few years I think I’m going to change to a regular week by starting my tracking on Sunday morning and ending on Saturday night. I can’t recall a reasons to track my weekly steps any differently.

By the way, the week before last I set a new record for the amount of steps walked in a week. I broke the previous week’s record of 75,550 by recording 85,472 steps. Not bad at all – especially when you consider that you’re supposed to walk 70,000 steps in a week. :-)

How to Fix the Major Automakers’ Dilemma

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Cut prices. That’s it. It’s a very simply solution, actually. Cut the prices of your vehicles so they are affordable during the current economic recession and tightening credit atmosphere and you’ll sell more product. Selling more product equals more income. More income equals a greater chance that your companies will see net revenues instead of deficits.

Is this stuff really that hard? Couldn’t any high school student educated in basic economics come up with a solution to the “problem” that the major automakers are facing? Hey, we can even get more in-depth about a solution and tell the automakers to cut expenses – a novel idea! Or how about this one? The automakers should be making more products that the consumers want to buy. Eureka! We’ve figured it out!!!

Seriously, it is a disgrace that the big three automakers are facing the problems that they are today. These companies deserve what they’re getting – they didn’t produce fuel efficient cars in mass quantities when the consumers demanded them as far back as ten years ago and are currently doing nothing to sell the excess quantities of their product. There are a lot of people out there (like me) who would LOVE to buy a new car. In fact, you could say that someone like me is constantly in the market to buy a new car.

But most of the people in my situation are realists. We know that we can buy a good used car that is only one or two years old for 60% – 75% of the price of the same model if it was brand new. Why would anyone pay the premium to purchase the new car in this economy? With all of the executives driving the buses at these companies (pardon the pun) can it be that none of them realize that they need to cut prices in order to stimulate sales? I’m a big fan of Chevrolet (and I have no idea why since I’ve paid more to have my Blazer fixed than the thing could ever be worth). I’d love to buy a 2009 Chevy Impala. Yahoo! Autos suggests that the model I would like to buy starts at $28,000 and that the 5-year cost to own this car is $52,000.

Why would I ever buy that car in today’s grim economy? Is there no one at Chevrolet who is looking at this and saying, “Hmmm… We need to fix this problem.” Better yet – do the people at Chevrolet even see this as a problem? Here’s why they should.

I can go to Enterprise Rent-a-Car and get a certified pre-owned (used) 2008 Chevy Impala for $15,000. Read that again. I can get a one-year old Impala for about HALF of what a new one costs.

How can you fix the problem that today’s automakers are facing? Simple. Cut prices and move product. If this doesn’t happen, then you and I better get ready to pay a little bit more in taxes because you know another government bailout won’t be too far behind.

Ah, The 6 MPH Driver

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

You gotta love New Jersey…

I was driving down Norwood Avenue this morning headed from Deal to Asbury Park and I had the luxury of getting caught behind a little blue-haired old lady going at a mind-blowing 6MPH. That’s right, folks, I was whipping down Norwood Avenue at trailblazing speeds!

Why do old people drive so slowly? You know, I don’t even care that they drive so slowly, it’s the fact that they do it during the hours of the day when regular drivers are out on the streets. Hey, I’m not a big fan of speeding or doing more than five or ten miles over the speed limit, but there has to be a minimum speed or something!

I’ve been busy doing things for my undergraduate chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity. On top of that, I got an e-mail from Rutgers saying that my internship has to be cut two weeks short and that on top of that, my final, publishable paper has to be in before August 19th.

So I’m fighting with them over that…you know you’re jealous.
