The final poem in our series of poetry by Joseph P. Martino celebrates America. As most of us have off from work today, let us remember to maintain our patriotism throughout the year – not just on American holidays. FYI – after today’s poem I have a big week’s worth of blog entries planned including yet another major milestone reached in my student loan repayment (this one is pretty big), a review of my trip to Chicago, a rundown of my recent attendance at a Total Nonstop Action Wrestling show in Asbury Park (including almost 150 pictures from the event), more commentary about what is going on with Monmouth University’s men’s basketball team, and some thoughts about fraternity recruitment prompted by an article delivered to my inbox a few days ago.
“The United States of America”
The United States of America, no more powerful words ever written or said.
A nation born of revolution and framed and formed by our founding fathers.
Meaningful words such as: Freedom, Liberty and Justice still prevail, ringing out loud and clear…as the American symbol of independence, “THE LIBERTY BELL,” did in our founders yesteryear.
Lady liberty stands ever vigilant, high upon her pedestal overlooking the harbor, adorned in her flowing robe, crown and flaming torch and arm raised aloft in her hand…America, just like our Lady Liberty, has never denied the American dream and gift of asylum to those seeking a better life in this great land, for when it comes Freedom and Liberty Americans and America does not or never will deny or look the other way, nor bury their heads in the sand.
America offers all a refuge and haven to the oppressed and downtrodden masses of the world for, it does not make a difference to this great nation and people if you’re rich, poor, ethnicity, or language that one speaks or continent you’re from, the only thing we ask is your allegiance and love of America as you follow the beam of light that that Lady Liberty shines along the path that leads to her welcoming front door.

See you folks again tomorrow!

Happy Fourth of July 2010, folks! To continue our patriotic celebration at JerseySmarts.com, we bring you another poem from our resident poet, Mr. Joseph P. Martino out of Millburn, New Jersey. This time around, Mr. Martino gets as patriotic as the rest of us feel on this amazing holiday. Enjoy!
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA by Joseph P. Martino
“THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,NO MORE POWERFUL WORDS
WHERE EVER SAID.
A AMERICA CREATED BY GOD AND LATER BY OUR FOUNDING
FATHERS,WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
TODAY THESE SAME AND SHINING PRINCIPLES STILL STAND,
RINGING OUT LOUD AND CLEAR JUST AS THE LIBERTY BELL
DID IN OUR FOUNDERS YESTERYEAR.
TODAY,LADY LIBERTY STANDS EVER VIGILANT IN N.Y. HARBOR, DRESSED IN
HER FLOWING ROBES CROWN AND FLAMING TORCH IN
HAND,….AND UNLIKE OTHER, WHEN IT CAME TO FREEDOM,SHE DID NOT STAND AROUND AND
BURY HER HEAD IN THE SAND. AT THIS VERY MOMENT LIKE A MOTHER SHE
STILL WATCHES OVER US,
BE IT NIGHT OR DAY,FROM TINY LITTLE LIBERTY ISLAND ,IN NEW YORK BAY.
Enjoy the rest of today and be safe!

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! No big blog update today, but I do want to wish everyone a happy fourth. If you’re going out and enjoying friends and/or family at a BBQ where alcohol is present, then please be careful and be sure to take caution when going home.
Otherwise, enjoy the holiday weekend!

New Year’s Eve is always one of those holidays where you want everyone to have a great time, but still be careful and cognizant of everyone else around them. Unlike other fun events like the SuperBowl, the Fourth of July, or Labor Day Weekend, New Year’s Eve is a night where people tend to get wrecked without much thought for what comes next because most people have the following day off!
So whatever it is that you decide to do tonight, have fun and be safe. Happy New Year’s everyone!

Happy Fourth of July to you all! What a great day, huh? I just got in from Long Branch, New Jersey’s Oceanfest 2005. It was a pretty good time! The weather couldn’t be better and the beach and boardwalk were packed.
I should have some pictures up on either this site or SigmaPi.com later on today. Of special interest to you all should be the picture of my roommate with Shrek and Fiona! Completely hilarious!
There are some interesting traditions that take place this weekend, not the least of which is the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Can someone explain to me how these little itty bitty people keep winning these events?!? But isn’t that always the way? You or I go out and have a tuna sandwich and manage to GAIN a pound, these little bastards go out and eat 15 plates worth of hot dogs and manage to weigh a little over 100 pounds!
Enjoy the fireworks displays tonight. I’ll be heading back to Long Branch to see the one from Oceanfest. Happy Fourth!
