As sucky as this might sound, I hadn’t seen the new “Longest Yard” movie until the other night. I know – I’m a wrestling fan, I’m a comedy fan, and this is a movie has both wrestlers and comedy. How could I have not watched it, right?
I was impressed with the writers and how they managed to give the wrestlers parts that highlighted their somewhat limited acting abilities. Actually – time out for a second. When I say limited acting abilities, I mean that for the vast majority of their “acting” careers they’ve been told to go out and be the biggest and baddest son of a bitch in the wrestling ring. So, in truth, they are limited in their acting skills – until they get more regular movies underneath their belts.
Anyway, having Kevin Nash play a hardass-turned-softie was hilarious. And giving Steve Austin the asshole-from-hell role fit him perfectly. As for Goldberg – well, there’s only so much that you can do with him in that particular role and he played the role well. The Great Kahli? He was funny – I thought the need for voiceovers was even funnier.
Burt Reynolds did his part very well as the elder statesman and coach of the team – I guess it’s a nice touch to have him back in the remake of one of his old movies. I recommend this movie – I give it “two thumbs up” and it’s one that I might want to get for the DVD library.
