Well, for those of you who are looking for some great information about how our commutes impact our daily lives, take a look at the following graphic which is provided by the good folks at College@Home. Enjoy!

Created by: College At Home

Pretty amazing, right? Makes you look at your commute in a whole different light (and not necessarily a good one)!

Just like the rest of you, I find myself wishing that there were more hours in the day. Between the day job, the side business, the budding new business(es), having a social life, the volunteer work, living life, and trying to find some time to exercise each day – there are absolutely no hours left in the day for anything else. Not much fun, pretty much no games, not a lot of free time for relaxing, almost no time to start/think about new projects or pet projects – you get the picture.

I’m going to try to find more hours in my day by waking up earlier each day. On a typical day, I generally get up between 6:30am and 7:00am. I’m going to try to move that back an hour and get my exercising in during the morning hours (I already know that it’s not going to be a long term success because I don’t like working out in the morning, but it might be good for now). So we’ll see how that goes…

The thing that really seems to sap the time from my day is this ridiculous commute to and from Trenton everyday. An hour there and an hour back. Sometimes I make it back from Trenton in 45 minutes because there isn’t so much traffic, but most mornings I wind up sitting in the car for more than an hour, so it all averages out. I like my job and all, but if a similar opportunity came up that cut my commute in half (or less), I’d probably take the offer.

Look, I’m an overachiever and I’m aware of that fact. Yes, I should calm down and not do so much extra with my non-day job hours, but I have to keep myself busy. I hate sitting around too much and I hate wasted time. Hell, when I clear out my DVR on the weekends I do it while I’m going to work on the laptop with the TV playing in the background! When I go to the gym I make it a point to read while I’m on the treadmill so I get two birds down with one stone!

I think part of the problem is the increase in non-day job business that I have going right now. Once some of my side projects are completed I should have some additional hours in the day. Until then, I propose that we extend each day to 30 hours long. Agreed?

One of the greatest things about living in New Jersey is that the entire state gets into a frenzy whenever there is even the slightest chance that there might be snow in the forecast. Yesterday, all of the major news channels were talking about how Central and Northern New Jersey were going to be blasted with snow. The reports even called for upwards of 5 or 6 inches of snow in Monmouth County where the snow accumulation is minimal at best.

Well, in preparation for the pending snowstorm most of my co-workers and I decided not to go to work today no matter what the weather. This was actually a decent decision since I woke up around 5:30am to check outside and we had about 4 inches of snow and absolutely no trucks on the road clearing for the morning commute. I think that the entire state figured that it needed a snow day and thus the truck drivers were given some extra time to sleep in while the snow accumulated. I should note, though, that as I’m writing this I’m looking outside of my window and the roads are completely cleared in my part of Tinton Falls and there is actually some traffic moving around outside.

The one thing that annoyed the hell out of me this morning was the local college where I teach part-time. I’m signed up for their emergency alert system which is very helpful when the college shuts down due to inclement weather. However, someone must have been going crazy over there this morning because I got two phone calls on my home line, two phone calls on my cell, two text messages, two e-mails on my work e-mail, and two e-mails on my home e-mail. I thought that was a bit overboard for 5:45am so I took myself off of their notification lists.

For those of you who are either off today because of the weather or working from home – enjoy it!

Hello all! As you can tell from looking around – there are some more format changes taking place at JerseySmarts.com. For starters, there is now an additional sidebar located on the left side of the pages. As I was adding more content to the right sidebar in the previous design, I noticed that it was getting a little crowded. There are only two ways to reduce the crowded effect – remove content or create more space.

I opted for the creation of more space by adding a new sidebar! My hope is that I can fully utilize each area of the blog to give you guys the best presentation possible.

Which brings me to my next point – over the next few weeks you’ll be noticing more opportunities for you to investigate some of the products and services that I use. Some might call this an increase in the number of advertisements, but as a guy who has been playing at the internet commerce game for 10 years I can tell you that there is no significant revenue coming from this site! Most of the opportunities that I’ll be integrating into the site are commission-based advertisements which, traditionally, are not big generators of revenue. But I’m not looking for revenue – I’m looking to show you guys what it is that I’m doing on the internet!

So you might see an integrated link talking about how I’ve been listening to my Sirius XM more and more lately.

See what I mean?

Anyway, I hope that you enjoy some of these changes and I always welcome your comments on additional content that you’d like to see on the site. Thanks!
