Just like the rest of you, I find myself wishing that there were more hours in the day. Between the day job, the side business, the budding new business(es), having a social life, the volunteer work, living life, and trying to find some time to exercise each day – there are absolutely no hours left in the day for anything else. Not much fun, pretty much no games, not a lot of free time for relaxing, almost no time to start/think about new projects or pet projects – you get the picture.

I’m going to try to find more hours in my day by waking up earlier each day. On a typical day, I generally get up between 6:30am and 7:00am. I’m going to try to move that back an hour and get my exercising in during the morning hours (I already know that it’s not going to be a long term success because I don’t like working out in the morning, but it might be good for now). So we’ll see how that goes…

The thing that really seems to sap the time from my day is this ridiculous commute to and from Trenton everyday. An hour there and an hour back. Sometimes I make it back from Trenton in 45 minutes because there isn’t so much traffic, but most mornings I wind up sitting in the car for more than an hour, so it all averages out. I like my job and all, but if a similar opportunity came up that cut my commute in half (or less), I’d probably take the offer.

Look, I’m an overachiever and I’m aware of that fact. Yes, I should calm down and not do so much extra with my non-day job hours, but I have to keep myself busy. I hate sitting around too much and I hate wasted time. Hell, when I clear out my DVR on the weekends I do it while I’m going to work on the laptop with the TV playing in the background! When I go to the gym I make it a point to read while I’m on the treadmill so I get two birds down with one stone!

I think part of the problem is the increase in non-day job business that I have going right now. Once some of my side projects are completed I should have some additional hours in the day. Until then, I propose that we extend each day to 30 hours long. Agreed?

Whether you’re a Cardinals fan or not, you have to admit that the NFL was dealt a pretty big blow by having a 9 and 7 team make it to the SuperBowl. Sure, I’m a Giants fan and I would have preferred to see them in the big game, but I don’t think that any honest football fan can honestly say that the two best teams in the league are playing in the SuperBowl this year.

The Giants, Titans, and Eagles are all better teams. Hell, the Cowboys and Patriots are better teams and they both make me sick! That said, I’m looking for the Steelers to make a mockery out of the Cardinals and send them back to Arizona in no time at all. In truth, it’ll be interesting to see how the NFL will play the Roethlisberger vs. Warner match up. That said, I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I’m really not that interested in the match-up.

For those of you who are attending a party or SuperBowl gathering tonight, remember to be safe on the roads and don’t be stupid by drinking and driving. Other than that, enjoy the night!

Due to my association with the fraternity, I have a lot of connections with guys who are a few years younger than I am. One of these guys is a smart kid who was playing around online as the whole online communication thing became popular. So one day I asked him what the word “pwned” means and where it came from. Sure, I understand that it’s a variant of the word “owned,” but why the use of a “p” instead of an “o” when spelling the word? Here is his response:

The phrase “pwned” originated because of a typo, and it stuck as a phrase among the elite, or “l33t” h4ackers of the AOL Chat Room era, circa 1999-2002. A “newb,” or newbie, was a new face in these chat rooms where the “l33t” hung out. One was said to be “l33t” if they had a 3-character screen name and/or their screen name was in lowercase, as there was a 4-character minimum upon signing up and all first-letters of the screen name were always capitalized.

Just thought I’d share that with everyone so you understood what the hell this ridiculous term means, too! Thanks, GGL!

From the “This is the Problem with America Today” files, we have the case of young Jericho Scott. Mr. Scott is a 9-year-old pitcher whose team has been disqualified from playing in their league because Jericho is too good of a pitcher! I shall rephrase…the kid pitches a 40-something per mile fastball and the parents of the opposing players go running bloody murder that their children are frightened to play against him.

Are you serious?

One of the biggest problems that Americans will face in the future is that many of today’s parents are breeding their kids in an “everyone wins” type of atmosphere. From the article linked above:

“The spirit of the league was community, family, well-being, nurturing,” Peter Noble, the league’s attorney, told the Register. “It’s an extended family and it’s been disrupted.”

So this league was put together not so young athletes could compete against each other in the sport, but so everyone could participate in a feeling of well-being and nurture each other? What the hell does that even mean?!

What happened to playing in a sports league as a young kid and scratching and clawing your way to victory? If you come up against a kid like Jericho, then you know what? You lose! He’s going to beat you because he’s really good at the game. If you want to beat him then you train to become better at the game and you beat him. The parents in this league obviously see the league as a part-time babysitter for them and they are probably horrified at the thought of having to spend more time and money on the sport if their kid winds up liking the game. Imagine that – your “babysitter league” actually ignites some type of athletic passion in your kid that he or she wants to pursue…the horror!

I hate reading stories like this one. All of my best to young Jericho as he and his family struggle against a bunch of morons up in New Haven.

This is at once both good and frightening news. Good news because there was no reason to stop these two companies from merging in the first place and – as a combined organization – they may have the ability to become a profitable company. Frightening news because the merger plan has taken over 18 months to be approved.

What the hell is wrong with our government that it takes 18 months to approve the merger of two extremely small companies? Sad, really…

And it’s funny how politics makes strange bedfellows. The biggest personality on satellite radio is Howard Stern – someone who has been critical of the Republican administration for quite some time now. Who cast the deciding vote to allow the merger? A Republican. The Democrats on the FCC were looking to bog down the merger with such a massive amount of needed extras that it would have looked unappealing for any company.

In the end, as a consumer of satellite radio I’m happy. I’ve been thinking of giving up the service since Howard Stern is one of the main reasons that I even have Sirius XM and he’s only on a small fraction of the time due to a ridiculous vacation schedule. But now that the two companies have been allowed to merge – I’ll probably stick around for a little bit longer!

Since there aren’t really any crazy stories coming out of my gym visits any more (which is actually a nice change of pace), I don’t have much to say about my visit to the gym last night. The only odd thing about it was that I got there at 10:00pm which is about 10 minutes away from my usual bed time!

I don’t know – sometimes you just get the urge to go to the gym and go for a quick run. It made no sense and I’m tired for it now (the infamous “day after”), but it was actually a good, quick 45 minute workout to end my day.

The only thing that took me by surprise was that two of the guys that I advise (Scotty J and Ebony) were at the gym lifting weights at 10:00pm last night, too! As I said to them last night – who the hell lifts weights at such unGodly hours?!? Well the answer is – they do. And they’re in great shape because of it. Both of those guys have great commitment and I was impressed.

And now I’m tired.

The other night I got an e-mail from my old gym to let me know that their pool and jacuzzi are finally installed and working. For some history, I joined this gym in November 2003 and had a great deal of success there due to a mix of cardio, weightlifting, and swimming. The swimming really was key in losing weight and getting in shape.

Then in May 2005, they closed the pool for “renovations” that would be completed in “a few months” and definitely before Summer 2005 ended. Come June 2006 (a full year and a month later) and not only was the pool not finished, but the entire interior looked like hell because they undertook a bunch of renovations that they just couldn’t afford to complete. Oh…and they didn’t lower our membership rates due to decreased equipment available or the horrible conditions in the club.

So I left and went to Gold’s Gym. It cost more and they have no pool, but the interior is brand new and the atmosphere is great.

When this e-mail came in, I actually entertained flipping back to the old gym. This is the gym where there are a ton of weirdos and dirty, creepy old men. However, they have that pool and the pool is what really helped me shed the weight (I’ve actually stopped losing weight since the pool closed and I’ve gained a few pounds since then – just a few, though).

So I made a phone call and spoke to the folks over at the old gym and they were excited about the pool being open again. They told me about all of the great renovations that were being planned and how the gym would be a world class place when it was all done and over with and, honestly, they got me psyched to go back to them! Then I remembered…they’re not that good at completing renovations projects.

I guess that I WILL go back to the old gym in the next year or two, but I’m probably going to wait until they finish their renovations. I don’t see the point in giving them a full gym membership rate and not getting a full gym to be a member of, you know?
