According to my calendar, we have six weeks left for the CSA farm this season. I might try to work my way in there at some point during the off season to see what’s going on and whether they have any other types of organic food that we can purchase. Stay tuned for more pictures from the farm.

As you can see, we picked up more vegetables (especially yellow squash and zucchini) than we have in the recent past. Also, I can tell you that the share we received from Saturday, September 11th was pretty substantial, which is a good thing. Stay tuned – more pictures in the coming days…

Earlier today, I wrote about how much produce we picked up at the local CSA farm on September 4th. Well, we were also there on September 11th and though I don’t have a picture of the produce that we picked up, I do have a picture of some truly free-ranging chickens that were walking around the farm. Take a look below (click on the image to get a full-size picture).

Pretty cool, huh? The alternative to having these chickens freely ranging around the farm is to have them all cooped up in ridiculous small cages, pecking at each other for sustenance since they’re not able to find food on their own. It’s gross what the industrialized farms do to their animals – which is why I like seeing these chickens walking around like they own the place each week!

Hi everyone! Just in case you were wondering, I started yet another staycation on Friday, September 3rd that is going to last until this Sunday, September 12th. Not only did I have the extra days that I needed to use before I lost them at the end of the year, but I also have a guest staying with me this Wednesday through Sunday. My guest is the Chief Operations Officer for the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation (click here to make a small donation!). He’s in town to go out on some “thank you” visits to our donors and, if the topic of raising new funds comes up, then he’s in town to raise some money, too! Since I’m on vacation this week and because I serve as the Treasurer of the Foundation Board of Trustees, I’m traveling with him to meet some of these folks and talk to them about what we’ve been doing lately.

So far it’s been pretty fun!

I have a bunch of pictures to post on JerseySmarts.com and a bunch of stories to tell, too. The pictures range from our latest harvest at the local CSA farm to my time on the beach in Asbury Park two weeks ago. The stories are interesting, too, as they talk about how my classroom was a bit of a wreck during the first class that I taught this semester (this past Tuesday morning) and how I almost got into a bit of an altercation with one of the folks at the college bookstore after my class was over!

Stay tuned – I’ll be writing more tomorrow and the next day!

As you’ll see, there are a bunch of vegetables from the CSA farm strewn throughout this mess. A list of ingredients is available below the pictures.

Sunday morning breakfast - side shot

Sunday morning breakfast - top shot

Okay, so right off the bat you should know that the wheat toast and the eggs are from Wegmans, not the farm. The ingredients from the local CSA farm are: fresh garlic, green peppers, yellow squash, and red tomatoes. I added the mushrooms (a lot of mushrooms – also from Wegmans), bacon bits, and some salt and pepper. It was absolutely delicious!

Part of what makes the food that I make with farm food so tasty is the fact that the organic produce seems to have more “punch” in terms of flavor. The garlic is much more potent than the stuff you buy at the store, the green peppers actually have a strong peppery taste, and the yellow squash is great. I’m looking forward to picking up more of this delicious produce this Saturday!

It's getting better...

While this week’s take was better than last week’s, it’s still not the same type of abundance that we experienced during the first few weeks of this year’s season. I talked to the farmer a little bit and it seems that the fields are very dry and thus affecting the overall output of the farm. New Jersey has had a weird weather system this summer, flipping between scorching hot days, stuffy humid days, and the occasional rainy days.

Oh well. Tomorrow I’m going to post pictures of the omelet that I ate for breakfast this morning. It was a delicious combination of produce from the farm!

Well, sorta… It turns out that my local CSA farm hasn’t really produced very many good weekly “takes” in the last few weeks. In fact, take a look at my latest take from the local CSA farm:

Eh. Scant at best.

Pretty scant, huh? All that I was able to pick up in addition to what’s in the picture is some berries. I am, of course, heading back to the farm this Saturday morning so I’m hoping that there is a better take this week. In any event, I’ll post the results here.

Alright – I know that this is a bit late in being posted to the blog, but I’ve been busy! Below you can see a picture of our second take from the local CSA farm (which we actually picked up about two weeks ago). Granted, none of this food actually exists any more since we’ve either eaten it or given it away, but I wanted to share our second take with you folks anyway!

Take #2 for the 2010 Season

Just like the first week, you’ll see some kale and garlic scapes in there. Also, there was some red leaf lettuce as well as some collard greens and red kale (I think).

I should have taken a picture of what we picked up this past weekend – huge bulbs of organic garlic dominated the take and I’m not sure when we’ll ever actually use all of them. However, it’s better to have this stuff than not, right? Stay tuned – I’m trying to get some CSA take pictures up each week or at least every other week.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again when our local community supported agriculture (CSA) farm opens for business. This past Saturday, my roommate and one of our buddies went to the farm to get our share of this week’s crops. This week we picked up red kale, red lettuce, garlic scapes, bok choy, and collard greens. See the picture of our take below.

Our first take for the 2010 season

Thus far I’ve only tasted some of the garlic scapes after they were made into a very strong pesto by my roommate. I also mixed some of the pesto into some vodka sauce that I had with my garden rotini last night – it was pretty good! As the weeks go on we’ll be getting more and varied types of produce so stay tuned to see what the farm brings us this year!

Oh, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that my roommate and I completely gutted our refrigerator and freezer on Saturday afternoon. After the top-to-bottom cleaning that we gave that thing, there was enough room for us to place the entire bucket of produce that we got from the farm (the red bucket in the picture above) on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. It was a perfect fit!

Either I did eat or I almost ate a worm that was in one of the pears from the CSA farm. Damn it! I bit into the pear a little while ago and there was a brown spot so I spit out the piece of pear in my mouth. Then, upon further review of the brown spot, there was a small little thing in there moving around. I couldn’t tell if this was the front end or the back end of a worm, but I knew the damn thing was moving!

I think from now on when I go to eat the pears from the CSA farm I’ll cut them up first!

In other news, one of my roommates made a pear pie with the pears. I suggested that he try to make a pair of pear pies. Since he used four pears for the pie, I told him that if he’s using a pair of pears for the pie then if he tried to make a pair of pear pies each using a pair of pears, it would be the perfect use of the produce.

Sorry…had to.
