TV Review: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

First things first – this review is way too premature in being written. The new Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show has only been on the air for a week and no one can confidently say whether or not it is a hit or a bomb yet. However, since I’m in the mood to write about Jimmy Fallon’s version of the Late Night show, here we go.

I’ve watched a few episodes of Late Night and I think there are definitely some positive aspects of the show. For example, having The Roots as your house band is incredible. Also, Jimmy has been able to maintain a high quality list of guests for his first few days of the show and that’s pretty impressive.

One aspect of the show that seriously needs improvement, though, is Jimmy’s tone during the interviews. There are times when he’s talking to the guests where the volume of his voice lowers to a somewhat inaudible level. I don’t think it’s my television that is creating the awkward sound quality – I think it’s a fluctuation in Jimmy’s voice. All of that being said, let’s be real – if that’s the biggest complaint that I have right now with Late Night, then the show is doing pretty well!

All in all, Jimmy will probably do well with the show, but it’s likely that we’ll be seeing a much different product in another few weeks. That’s how these network television executives are with their new programming – put it on for a few weeks, change it up according to what the demos suggest is working, then crank it to the extreme.

Make Money From Your Hobbies

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

You may have noticed a new site or two on the “Check Out These Sites” listing on the sidebar. One of them is GetRichSlowly.org – a great blog site about attacking debt and learning to build wealth in small steps. The gist of the blog is that you can’t really get rich quick in an overnight scheme, even though the late night infomercials are packed with such ideas. The main writer on this blog, J.D. Roth, explains a variety of ways that you can begin to look at money in a different way. One post I found spoke about making money from your hobbies.

I thought that this post would be most beneficial to share with everyone as this is essentially what I’ve done with Usable Web Solutions, LLC. I created Usable Web Solutions, LLC for a bunch of reasons – one of which was to generate some extra income. Now, with the company at about two and a half years old, I have an additional yet modest stream of income coming my way each quarter. Is it enough for me to break out of the rat race? Not a chance. Is it enough to provide me with some comfort in a bad economy and with a variety of worst case scenarios possible at any time? Yes.

In any event, I just thought that you all would like to read about what other people have done to transform their hobbies into profitable businesses. After reading Roth’s post I thought up an idea for a new company…one that focuses on writing! I might put that one on the sidelines, though, as I’ve been thinking more and more about writing a book lately. So, we’ll see what happens!

Late Night at the Gym

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Since there aren’t really any crazy stories coming out of my gym visits any more (which is actually a nice change of pace), I don’t have much to say about my visit to the gym last night. The only odd thing about it was that I got there at 10:00pm which is about 10 minutes away from my usual bed time!

I don’t know – sometimes you just get the urge to go to the gym and go for a quick run. It made no sense and I’m tired for it now (the infamous “day after”), but it was actually a good, quick 45 minute workout to end my day.

The only thing that took me by surprise was that two of the guys that I advise (Scotty J and Ebony) were at the gym lifting weights at 10:00pm last night, too! As I said to them last night – who the hell lifts weights at such unGodly hours?!? Well the answer is – they do. And they’re in great shape because of it. Both of those guys have great commitment and I was impressed.

And now I’m tired.
