About Joe (Updated 12.21.08)

About Joe’s Journal on JerseySmarts.com
Once upon a time I had two separate blogs. The first one was called Joe’s Journal and it was my personal blog based off of my original website (which was a wrestling website). I also created JerseySmarts.com to be a sort of clearinghouse blog where me and some of my more intelligent friends could write about whatever was going on inside and outside of the state. The kick would be that there is a New Jersey twist on the entries. However, most of the contributing writers were too busy to contribute so I wound up having two blogs with essentially the same content - all generated by me. Since it was pretty useless to spend my time double-posting all of the entries, I consolidated and it’s been great ever since.

And now for a more search engine friendly description of JerseySmarts.com…

Typical “About Me” Blurb
Hello everyone! My name is Joe, which if you haven’t deduced yet…you’re a moron. I’m 27 years old and I’m currently living in Tinton Falls, Monmouth County.

In 2003, I graduated with a BA in English and minors in History, Political Science, and Philosophy from Monmouth University. In 2006, I graduated with an MA in Public Policy and a concentration in community economic development and nonprofit management from the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. When time and schedule permit, I’m an Adjunct Professor in Political Science at the local college (more on that below). My day job, though, is to help finance charter school facilities, smart affordable housing, commercial revitalization, and economic development in underserved communities around New Jersey and the northeast United States (both geographic and demographic). How many people can say that their job is to help build classrooms for school children? Not many.

There are a lot of things that I like to write about, but the one topic that I feel I have to continually bring up on this blog is student loan debt. My student loan debt is so large that I was featured in a USA Today cover story about outrageous student loan debts. Pretty amazing, huh? :) Even though my undergraduate degree cost a ton of money I wouldn’t really change anything about my collegiate experience. Actually, if I would have changed anything, maybe I would have paid down some of the principal on the loans when I was school, but who knows?

Anyway, the student loans are only a small part of this life. I’m also a volunteer to Sigma Pi Fraternity, International. Currently, I serve as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation.

In January 2006 I started my own web design firm called Usable Web Solutions, LLC. It has been a pretty successful venture thus far, but the truth is that it is a very part-time business for me (which some clients just don’t understand). Some folks have wondered why I don’t branch out and start doing major advertising and creating bigger and more powerful websites. Honestly, I just want to create websites that are usable for the people and organizations who buy them. So many times a person stumbles across a website that hasn’t been updated in years and they think to themselves, “Wow - someone probably paid thousands of dollars for this piece of garbage website and it looks horrible now.” I started my company to change that - at least on a local level.

In Fall 2007, I started as an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University. Right now I teach government-themed introductory courses. Being a Professor is extremely rewarding for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the opportunity to relay a deeper understanding for certain, basic American principles to undergraduates who may not have previously appreciated them. I also have the ability to create a friendly learning environment; my internal belief on this topic is that the students should not feel that their relationship in the classroom with their Professors and on-campus with the administration is an “us against them” situation. The students, professors, and administration must have the mindset that “we’re all in this thing together.” In today’s world, the latter scenario is the key to young students waking up their minds.

Too Much Information “About Me” Blurb
I was born in Manhattan, New York and moved to Morris County in New Jersey around seven or eight years old. I had a great time in my high school of 1300+ people, serving as President of my class up until senior year, when I became President of the Student Council. I was also a starting member of our state championship football team (the only state football championship in school history - even through today) and the Captain of our wrestling team. I had a 4.02 GPA when I graduated high school (we had weighted GPAs) and a 3.4 GPA when I graduated from Monmouth University. I graduated Rutgers with a 3.9 GPA in my Masters Program.

As far as my love life, I generally keep that private. I’ve had a few girls that I’ve spent a lot of time with and one who I actually was in love with, but nothing major has ever come out of that. I’m single and at this point, I don’t think that I’ll be able to find a New Jersey girl who is not so “high maintenance” that the relationship will be worth it! Lots of the girls in the Northeast have the “Princess Complex” and it’s just too much added aggravation to deal with in my already crowded day. I guess that’s a dreary outlook, but then again, I don’t mind looking out of state for a wife!

At one point I wanted to move to the South/Midwest for a little bit, though I am unsure if I’m still interested in that big of a move away from New Jersey. I like living in New Jersey, but the people are really nice in the South/Midwest and the girls are completely unbelievable in terms of looks (they’re smoking hot!).

That’s pretty much all that I have for this typical “about me” page. If you want to know anything else, you can ask me via e-mail, but chances are that you’re asking a question that you really don’t need to know the answer to. So yeah…that’s all I got!
