I bought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the other day (not to be confused with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the movie Gene Wilder made famous). I liked this movie! I remember watching it in the theatres over the summer and hearing everyone bemoan it as a waste of time, space, effort, etc. Many people just commented that it wasn’t like the original and it wasn’t really what they expected.
You have Johnny Depp and Tim Burton here, folks. What did you expect? Anyone remember Edward Scissorhands? By the way, I bought that the other day, too.
So what do you guys think? Was Depp extremely Michael Jackson-like or what? From his television interviews, Depp has gone on record as saying that he didn’t even think of playing the part like he was Jackson, but there are some striking similarities (though most are of a physical nature, not a sexually awkward one).
The creepiness of Tim Burton’s mind and the way that Johnny Depp is able to channel that corrupted vision of crazy is what makes this movie good. And if you pay attention, there are a lot of weird little adult comments littered throughout the movie. Just something for the parents out there to be on the lookout for.
Good movie – I recommend it.
