What the hell is wrong with some groups?

If you don’t know, I’m in a fraternity. I graduated college last May and now I’ve become the Advisor to my undergraduate fraternity chapter.

Now, with that background information, let me say that we are a modern fraternity in the sense that we don’t hit our pledges and we don’t do gay stuff to/with them. That’s just pathetic to lower yourself to those standards in today’s world. Also, we focus on social and service events that adhere to a strict insurance code that we have to follow.

And believe it or not, it’s all true. We really DON’T have kegs at parties and we really DO take care of people (male or female) who pass out at our chapter house.

Now then – the point of my post. We go camping once per semester as a sort of pledge/brother retreat. It’s really fun – going out into the woods, etc. This year we had planned on going in to a camp ground that is frequented by other fraternities in our state. Sounds like fun, huh?

Well, the other fraternity apparently went in there a week or so ago, fit the common fraternity stereotype with kegs and craziness and now our chapter is being barred from going to those same camp grounds.

So my point is this – if you’re in a fraternity (or sorority for that matter), take a step back and look at your group. If you are in a group that fits more of the 1970′s and 1960′s fraternity stereotype and not a group that is advancing into the 21st Century – well, you need to consider what is wrong with your group. That is, if you see anything wrong with it at all.

Personally, I like the fact that my group is living in the 21st Century while keeping the 19th Century ideals and mottos that we were founded off of. To be in the same place that the guys were in during the 60′s and 70′s? Well, if that’s not negative progression, I don’t know what is.
